SFC Insider ranks the Atlantic Division ahead of this week's HUK Charleston Billfish Cup
One-third of the way through the Atlantic Division schedule, here’s how SFC Insider ranks the clubs going into this week’s Huk Charleston Billfish Cup. For a look at the updated points standings can be found here.
1) New Jersey Sea Birds Angling Club
Obvious choice. The Flock have taken the Third Coast Renegades’ playbook and will look to chart a path of their own in Charleston this week. A high placing would keep their chances of locking up the top seed out of the Atlantic for the Zane Grey Championship Playoffs. They haven’t fished Charleston before, but Captain Blaine Birch and the boys also never fished Walker’s Cay, and they ended up capturing the flag atop the gantry in victory.
2) South Carolina Outcast Angling Club
Call it “home field advantage,” but Captain Stuart Lackey’s family caught one of the first blue marlin ever off the coast of Charleston. Their disappointing seventh place finish at Walker’s only dropped the Outcast to third in the points standings, 100 points behind Lights Out New England.
Defending home turf (waters) this weekend flips the script back in their favor.
3) Lights Out New England Angling Club
Runners-up at Walker’s Cay this past week, that helped pay off an entire month spent in the Bahamas. Funny enough, Charleston is a homecoming for Lights Out as well since they purchased their boat from here. Keep an eye out for them to perform well and build on the momentum from Walker’s Cay.
4) New York Granders Angling Club
Speaking of Momentum, a third place finish at The Walker’s Cay Open should serve as a springboard for the ladies to perform well again this weekend. Sitting fourth in the points standings, the Granders are only 200 point behind South Carolina Outcast in second.
5) East Coast Remix Angling Club
A good Friday for Remix with Sarah Cleare reeling in the squad’s first blue marlin of the SFC season went downhill on Championship Saturday. Besides missing a few fish that were marked, their 62’ Viking’s isinglass cracked, exposing the bridge and helm controls to the elements. With such a quick turnaround for Charleston, Remix may have to go the entire tournament with a completely open helm. Tough sledding in rough conditions like the ones expected over this weekend.
6) North Carolina Flare Angling Club
The other boat with isinglass issues was North Carolina Flare. Similarly to Remix, an urgent fix will be a herculean task given that the boats needed to stop and go. Good news for the Flare though is that Captain Brian Dressler and company have fished these waters multiple times, leaving plenty of room to climb the leaderboard with a strong placement.
7) South Florida Sails Angling Club
We unfortunately will not be seeing Captain Jim Puller, the Osheroff’s their boat “Osh-It,” and their enormous Jobu bobblehead in Charleston, leaving a big question mark in how the Sails will fair the rest of the season. Should a team not be able to represent the Sails, the club will finish with seventh place points automatically, damaging their chances to make the Zane Grey Championship Playoffs at the end of the season. The Sails currently sit fourth in the standings after taking third at the season-opening Fort Lauderdale Billfish Open, and fourth at last week’s Walker’s Cay Open.
